Some write for power,

Some write to praise,

And some for laurels lust,

But not so I,

For ’til I die

I write because I must

I write of land,

I write of sea

And hills where-in we trust ;

Of love and life,

Of war’s red strife

I write because I must

I’ve trod the snow,

I’ve sailed the sea

And rode the desert dust;

Of  where I’ve been

And what I’ve seen —

I write because I must

Some write to teach,

Some write to preach,

And earn a crust.

Most write for pelf,

But for myself–

I write because I must.
