Sharing & Reflecting on Learning

ROBOTICS DESIGN

Session 1

Today we did the highlight of year 5…… ROBOTICS! Robotics is a subjects where you build a robots. We started by receiving a booklet of instructions of what to do. it was called LEGO MINDSTORMS.

Our goal was to build a robot with wheels(the instructions were in the booklet.) Some of the parts were: the battery and the LEGO we used to build the robot.

we ended up finishing and here is a photo that shows the beginning and end of our build.

Session 2

Today we programmed our robots. I programmed my robot to go back and forth.

Session 3

Today we did a lot of stuff. Like finishing off turning my projects and a new one too. The Baseball Pitch challenge.

Session 5

Today we Learned a new version of Robotic called Censors. The Compulsory Task was to get the robot to cross a colour and go to another colour and backwards and between the 2. After doing this task as a program we tried to put it on the robot but for some reason the robot did not work, we tried to put on some other programs but they did not work either

Session 6

Today we learned how to use another censor. Today it was the touch censor, the use of this was to stop or start a program by a certain part that we built

Rube Goldberg Machine

Session 1

Today we started our Rube Goldberg machine. The aim was to get a peice of rubbish in a bin. We got put in a team of 3. In the middle of the session he had a musical lesson so that left us with 2 people.

We started building by putting : a wheel on top of a visual planner on top of a dictionary and then 2 visual planners next 2 each other, Which would knock down some blocks of 100 and then hit a ruler which wold hit more blocks and then some more blocks which then hit the peice of paper into the bin.

In the end we came really close to getting the pece of rubbish in. It even bounced off the side of the bin.

I have a few videos of the attempts of trying to get the machine to work.

Session 2

Today Year 5 had another session of Rube Goldberg (session 2). We used LEGO for our material to build our simple machines (pulleys, ramps, etc).

I was partnered with Mitchell to build a simple machine called a board bouncer. A board bouncer has marble on top of it and has some dominoes connected to it which are hit by another contraction.

The dominoes hit a pole which is connected to a platform supporting the marble. That makes the platform slowly move down the pole lowering the marble to hit the next contraption.

Session 3

Today we had another session of Rube Goldberg (session 3). We were all partnered into 3 except me (I was partnered into 2 with ditch again). We could decide what we wanted to build. Me and ditch decided to build a paddle-boat.

This required lots and lots of K’nex  and work to build. We almost had jobs because at the start he got me to get the different types of K’NEX to build with and he made the parts. I built some parts but since ditch has a lot of Lego at his house he was extremely good at building.

We ended up with a impressive paddle-boat that actually worked on land.

The Problems of this was that the elastic band had a limited amount of pull-back. Meaning that it was much worse on land than in water, meaning that it could only go a couple of centre metres at best on land.

I believe that the aim of this Machine is to be a teaching source to teach the user how the pullback of the elastic band.

Session 4

Today we did another period of design (pulleys). I partnered up with ditch and then we started. We started with a single pulley, then a double and a quad.

I learned how to build all the stuff necessary:single pulley, double and quad. I also learned how to build them and what the pulleys do.

We ended up with a proud, all of above done. 😁

Session 6

Today we were meant to do a design of the Rube Goldberg Project. We did. I drew the materials, the goal, the team members, a title, an awkward drawing and a description to go with all of that.

Session 7

Today we fine-lined our design. I added some stuff and took a picture which will be on this blog now

Session 8

Today in design we discussed who was bringing what. We decided that I was going to bring string and dominoes. Charles was bringing our material. And Jess was bringing the plastic cups [pulleys]. The rest was already there.

Session 9

Today in Design we built the 1st part of our Rube Goldberg Machine. Which was a ramp,[Made out of Hot wheels track]. Then a Match-box car would run down that car to hit 3 dominoes. The dominoes hitting a Marble. The Marble would go down a pipe, hitting my keyboard on H.

There are meant to be 2 machines, 1 hitting the letter I to spell hi. But we still haven’t figured out how to make it actually hit the right keys.

Here are a couple of photos 0f our machine in person.

Session 10

Today our Rube Goldberg Machine got an extension. We now have a platform and have found a use of the Heater that was conveniantly placed near our Rube Goldberg Machine.

Here are our pictures and videos!

Session 10

Today we added another extension of our Rube Goldberg. As well as that we finally finished our Rube Goldberg Machine.

It went well but the thing was that it had to be portable
