For my OTTT project I have decided to do the history of rip curl. I decide to chose rip curl because of its amazing history and how successful it has become.
Rip curl is one of the largest board and wetsuit brands in Australia, Europe and south America. When rip curl first started it was just sold boards. However in 1969 Alan green (a local surfer and he also spends a lot of time at wetsuit drive company.) came across rip curl from then on he help make wetsuits the first sewing machine that they used when Alan green came was the pffaf 138 zig zag. I wonder what that sewing machine look like.
The story that I chose was how rip curl started. I chose this story because rip curl such a big company and I wanted to know how it started. In march 1969 to surfing friends Doug Warbrick and Brian singer, saw each other on gilbert street in Torquay. Claw had just finished a summer of shaping boards and Brian was about to go back teaching as a since teacher.
as they keep talking about how amazing the waves were this summer at bells beach they strait away thought that they needed a way to keep surfing bells beach but how.
Claw then had a thought, but little did he know that this idea that 2 friends had come up. Claw then said to Brian do you want to start making surfboards together. Brian then thought about what claw had just said to him this would mean I could surf so much more and then right there and then brain said yes. A few days later Brian quit his job as a teacher.
In April 1969 the first rip curl boards were made. Claw was doing 4 boards a week in there garage and brain was sanding a making fins.
I would really like to make a film on how rip curl started.
